Send enquiryThe Shishi Odoshi (also known as ‘Deer Scarer’ 鹿威し in Japan) is a traditional Japanese water feature originally designed to frighten away animals that posed a threat to agriculture.
Today, the bamboo water feature is at home in many gardens. The Shishi Odoshi introduces a distinctly oriental aesthetic to your garden and brings a sense of calm through the sound of trickling water and the cycle of the bamboo pivoting arm filling with water and striking a rock as it empties out.
Made from golden-yellow Tali bamboo.

The water feature is connected to a source of water and a pump.
The water goes up through a tube to reach the smaller spout, which has a continuous flow to the larger spout beneath. When the bamboo is filled will water, it empties thanks to gravity, and provides a satisfying sound as the water resets to repeat.
Traditionally, the Shishi Odoshi is paired with a stone to create a gentle sound of the bamboo striking stone.
